Ann Arbor News is closing after July

Published by Karen Moorhead under Economy

We are all witnessing the changing times and every day something new comes along.  Today the Ann Arbor News announced that it will no longer be publishing a daily paper after July and I am sorry to see it go.  There are employees who will move with the new on line source and will protect their jobs, but there are many more in production and delivery that will not be so lucky.

As much as we like to complain about our local paper, it is still an institution.  Which one of us doesn’t remember the image of Dad coming home and sitting down to relax with the newspaper before dinner?  Yes, it might have been Mom from work and ourselves as well, but it is an image which will no longer be viable in Ann Arbor.  The paper boys and girls must find new sources for a bit of after work and income.

When it comes to the news we undoubtedly will search on GoogleNews and Twitter and our very own

Ann Arbor Chronicle, but I can’t help wondering about the folks, who don’t have Internet at home.  It is not often that this is the case, but what about these folks?  How will they get the news? The only source will be the television? That would be a travesty!

Again, I wish all the employees of The Ann Arbor News the best, with all of these changes and I’m sure your world is rocked today.

It’s March and Everyone is Irish on St. Pat’s Day

Published by Karen Moorhead under Economy

March is the month that my Dad was born and its also the month he died.  It holds a ton of really great memories for me.

I was crazy about St Patrick’s Day when my kids were little.  They awoke in our household and found the milk had turned green. Yes Green Milk!  Kind of crazy and kind of special, but it’s what happened in our home on St Pat’s day.  My simple way to honor my Dad and our heritage.  St Pat’s Day is that one day a year everyone is Irish, but if you are Irish…oh you know really you are special.  You are the real deal.  You are really Irish and everyone else pretends on this special day.

I had to do something special on St Pat’s Day because the kids didn’t send cards to each other or get the day off…and green drinks seem to be in order so Green Milk was my answer to remembering this day.

Dad was born in March and he died in March and I miss him to this day.  He had a smile that could melt hearts and he was 100% Irish and looked it.  Dad loved the sun and the beach and he didn’t tan … he got red.  Not really sun burnt red, but just like a lobster red.  That is my Dad and the kid’s Grandpa.   I guess he had a pretty good grasp of life and enjoying life.

I miss Dad, but wanted my kids to know that they are Irish and life is good.  Dad would have wanted them to enjoy life and I can hope Green Milk might be a pleasant memory for them.

I wish all of you and Grand St Patrick’s Day!!  Enjoy!!
